Was an error in the UV map combined with the texture size-down process. Much of the ambient occlusion and some surface lighting is baked to cut down on render times.

Becoming quite the bug finder, huh? They still issuing patches to your software?

Not for my version. This specific problem was more user error than software error. A lot of troubleshooting stems from the fact I have to render things to see them; even when sizing down the image to 320x280 or 640x480 it can be a lengthy process to adjust surfaces/lights.
